Os bancos centrais, como emissores monopolistas de fiat (obrigatório) de dinheiro estatal, operam não para ajudar as economias, mas para ajudar os governos fiscalmente pró-fligentes a financiarem-se a baixo custo e de forma sub-reptícia. Ultimamente, em resposta à disseminação (e ameaça) de moedas criptográficas, os bancos centrais têm prosseguido planos para emitir os seus fiat mone em formato digital. Segundo o BIS, 86% deles estão a investigar activamente as moedas digitais do banco central (CBDC), 60% estão a fazer experiências com elas, e 14% têm projectos-piloto. Os fãs afirmam que os CBDCs ajudarão os bancos centrais a gerir melhor o sistema de pagamentos, a inflação, e a economia. Mas os motivos nefastos também são prováveis, tendo a ver com a "Teoria Monetária Moderna" e meios mais directos de financiamento de governos pró-fligentes.
